This is a 2-hour online course on Secret Belgian-style bookbinding, a relatively uncommon bookbinding style with a hard cover and a spine, in which the paper signatures are woven onto the spine rather than glued. Previous bookbinding experience would definitely be helpful, but not entirely necessary to take this class. You will have the option to order the materials for this project if you already have some bookbinding tools at home, or a kit of bookbinding tools + the materials for this specific project (see below for details).

The cost of this class is $25 without materials, $55 with materials, and $85 with materials + tools.

After you have registered & paid, you will receive a link to the scheduled Zoom meeting within a few days. Please make sure that your computer or phone has the Zoom application installed & set up in advance of the class so that we can get started right away. Materials kit includes: 3 pieces of book board (covers + spine), 3 pieces of book cloth, 2 pieces of decorative paper (for the inside covers), paper for inside the book, waxed linen bookbinding thread, 2oz of neutral pH adhesive. You would need to provide your own awl(s), sewing needle with a larger eye (a straight needle is fine, but a curved one would be easier to use), ruler, glue brush/other glue-spreading tool, scissors or a craft knife, and optionally a bone folder and extra beeswax.

Materials + Toolkit includes: 3 pieces of book board, 3 pieces of book cloth, 2 pieces of decorative endpaper, paper for inside the book, waxed linen bookbinding thread, two bookbinding needles, a light duty awl, a heavy duty awl, 2oz neutral pH adhesive, a palette knife, a bone folder, a small piece of beeswax, a 6” ruler, an x-acto knife, and newspaper for protecting surfaces.
