This class will explore a unique process that combines letterpress printing with natural dyes: mordant printing! In Part 1, we'll have set short phrases in wood type and printed them on fabric using mordant pastes (chemicals that allow natural dyes to bond to textile fibers). If you can't make it to Part 1, that's ok, we'll make extra prints for you to dye and take home! Part 2 will cover how to make a dye bath from plant materials or natural dye extracts and how to dye your printed fabric. Once immersed in the dye bath, the fabric will take on color, and the printed areas will be especially vibrant and deeply pigmented.
